The “Nudie Suit” Was Invented by a Ukrainian Immigrant
The ultra-flashy, rhinestone-encrusted suits worn by Texas music royalty
The ultra-flashy, rhinestone-encrusted suits worn by Texas music royalty (like Willie Nelson) and pop-culture icons (like Elvis) weren’t invented in the American West. They were the brainchild of Nudie Cohn, a Ukrainian-born Jewish tailor who settled in Los Angeles.
-
The Evolution: Cohn took traditional, rugged Western workwear and fused it with the glitz of show business.
-
The Legacy: His wild designs—featuring hand-embroidered marijuana leaves, cacti, and thousands of genuine Swarovski crystals—forever bridged the gap between the rough-and-tumble cowboy and the flamboyant stage performer.

The story of the "Nudie Suit" is one of the most remarkable chapters in American fashion history.
It is a tale of a penniless immigrant who completely redefined the visual identity of the American West by blending traditional tailoring with the unapologetic glamour of Hollywood and show business.
Here is the deeper history of Nudie Cohn, the invention of his famous suits, and how they transformed country music culture.
The Man Behind the Rhinestones: Nudie Cohn
The man the world knew as Nudie Cohn was born Nutya Kotlyarenko in 1902 in Kyiv, Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire). To escape the anti-Semitic pogroms of the era, his parents sent him and his brother to the United States when he was just 11 years old.
When he passed through Ellis Island, immigration officials misspelled his name as “Nudie,” and it stuck.
Before he became a tailor to the stars, Cohn lived a transient life during the Great Depression. He crisscrossed the country, working as a boxer, a movie extra, and even manufacturing undergarments for showgirls in New York City. This early exposure to the mechanics of theatrical, high-visibility clothing would later spark his revolution in Western wear.

The Birth of the Glitz (and a Risk Taken on Tex Williams)
In the early 1940s, Nudie and his wife, Bobbie, moved to Los Angeles and opened “Nudie’s of Hollywood” in a small garage. At the time, Western performers wore clean but relatively modest, utilitarian clothing—mostly solid colors with basic fringe or piping.
Nudie wanted to change that. He believed that if a performer was on a stage, the person in the very back row should be able to see them clearly.
The Breakthrough: In 1947, Nudie approached country-Western singer Tex Williams. Nudie offered to make Williams a custom outfit, but there was a catch: Nudie was broke and needed Williams to buy the fabric. Williams sold a auction horse to fund the material. Nudie created a suit covered in hand-placed rhinestones that caught the stage lights like diamonds. Williams’ next show was a massive success, and the demand for Nudie’s ultra-flashy style exploded overnight.
Anatomy of a “Nudie Suit”
A true Nudie Suit was a masterpiece of bespoke tailoring and wearable art. They were instantly recognizable by several distinct features:
-
The Rhinestones: Nudie was the first to heavily apply genuine Swarovski crystal rhinestones to wool and gabardine Western suits.
-
Intricate Chain-Stitch Embroidery: He employed legendary master embroiderers, most notably Manuel Cuevas (who later became a famous designer in his own right). The embroidery wasn’t generic; it was deeply personalized to the artist.
-
The Custom Theme: If a singer sang about water lilies, Nudie embroidered water lilies onto the lapels. Webb Pierce famously ordered a suit featuring silver dollars and guitar-shaped pockets. Hank Williams wore a white Nudie suit adorned with musical notes dancing down the sleeves.
Crossing Cultural Boundaries
While Nudie suits became the ultimate status symbol in Nashville, their influence quickly bled into mainstream pop culture and rock ‘n’ roll.
Perhaps the most famous Nudie creation of all time was the $10,000 gold lamé suit worn by Elvis Presley on the cover of his 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong album in 1959.
Later, in the late 1960s, rock musician Gram Parsons of The Flying Burrito Brothers commissioned a Nudie suit that bridged the gap between traditional country and the counterculture movement. Parsons’ suit featured embroidered marijuana leaves, poppy flowers, and a massive flaming cross on the back—a design that shocked traditionalists but solidified the Nudie suit as a symbol of rebellion and high-art fashion.
The Legacy of Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors
By the 1960s and 70s, Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors on Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood had become a cultural landmark. It wasn’t uncommon to see John Wayne, Cher, Elton John, and Johnny Cash all hanging out in the shop at the same time.
Nudie Cohn passed away in 1984, but his garments remain highly coveted museum pieces and collector’s items, often fetching tens of thousands of dollars at auction. A Ukrainian immigrant with no formal training had successfully taken the rugged clothing of the American frontier and turned it into the ultimate expression of American stardom.
