The Chairy Orchard in Denton Texas – Texas Sights

As a proud Texan with a deep appreciation for the unique and quirky spots that make our state special, I was both charmed and saddened by the story of The Chairy Orchard in Denton. This whimsical installation, nestled between two homes, was a testament to community creativity and the Texan spirit of turning the ordinary into something extraordinary.

Created by neighbors Anne Pearson and Judy Smith, affectionately known as the “Chairy Fairies,” The Chairy Orchard featured hundreds of chairs arranged in imaginative displays. It became a beloved spot for photos, picnics, and simply soaking in the artistic ambiance. Unfortunately, after eight years of bringing joy to locals and visitors alike, the orchard closed in June 2023 due to repeated vandalism.

While The Chairy Orchard may no longer be around, Denton still offers a plethora of activities that capture the vibrant and eclectic spirit of the city. Here are ten must-do experiences:

  1. Explore the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum: Dive into local history within this iconic 1896 building, showcasing exhibits that highlight Denton’s rich heritage.
  2. Stroll through the Denton Community Market: Held on Saturdays, this market features local artisans, farmers, and live music, offering a true taste of Denton’s community vibe.
  3. Catch a show at Dan’s Silverleaf: A staple in Denton’s live music scene, this venue hosts a variety of acts, from local bands to touring artists.
  4. Visit the Bayless-Selby House Museum: Step back in time at this Victorian-era home, meticulously preserved to showcase life in Denton at the turn of the 20th century.
  5. Enjoy nature at Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center: With miles of trails winding through diverse ecosystems, it’s a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts.

  2. Tour the University of North Texas (UNT) Campus: Home to renowned music and arts programs, the campus boasts beautiful architecture, public art installations, and the UNT Sky Theater planetarium.
  3. Browse Recycled Books, Records, & CDs: Housed in a historic opera house, this massive bookstore is a treasure trove for bibliophiles and music lovers.
  4. Dine at local favorite, LSA Burger Co.: Enjoy gourmet burgers on a rooftop patio overlooking the square, often accompanied by live music.
  5. Participate in the Denton Holiday Lighting Festival: A cherished annual event where the community gathers to celebrate the season with lights, music, and festivities around the courthouse square.

Denton’s blend of history, culture, and community spirit ensures that even with the loss of unique spots like The Chairy Orchard, there’s always something new and exciting to discover in this vibrant Texas town.

What a gift to have a friend who relates to you. And for you to have a friend who relates back. And you both together build a field of chairs. And you are happy. What a gift! To Texas and to everyone.
