The Texas Bucket List – Sand Castle Lessons on South Padre Island
Carve a big a for andy is awesome andy hancock is from australia and a friend that we featured on the texas bucket list back in 2016 when we showcased the world’s largest permanent sandcastle i love it i it makes so many people happy i think that’s what makes me happiest
This trip we took him up on an offer to learn how to make these works of art out of sand we call ourselves the sandcastle capital of the world and we do that for a reason because we build more sand castles than anybody else easily andy has called south texas home
For the last 20 years and there’s a few words that he doesn’t use too often down in these parts there’s only three times we use the words cold ice and snow and snow comes in cones obviously and then a beer is cold and ice goes in cocktails
But he does bellow out what it takes to build big sand castles thanks to his sand castle lessons that start off with 1400 pounds of sand standing in at six feet tall so give this a tap with both hands yeah for me and then just lift it straight off all right
There you go like this yep all right come on lift it up there you go look at that look at that success right i haven’t messed it up yet no and that makes sense because every time you do that on the beach it’s like ah well that’s it and it’s also sprayed
Because you should never go to the beach without your lube but um you know obviously so the first thing we’re going to do is just carve some of this side okay so the easiest way to make a sandcastle is to make a pencil i’m amazed at your
Angles and lines on that thing i mean it literally looks like a perfectly sharpened pencil yes yeah that that’s what that’s what you’re aiming for even though i was corrected by a four-year-old the other day she said that’s not a pencil andy i said oh i’m sorry what is it she said a
Crayon i said oh right okay being able to create this incredible castle all starts with the right tools these tools were developed on this very island many many many years ago by a man who still makes them and he worked for 25 years for nasa so we know we’re in good hands
And uh yeah nasa engineered and sand castle tools exactly yeah we don’t mess around here that is until andy needs the assistance of a straw so you can be socially distant from your sandcastle oh well that’s wonderful and obviously cocktail straw sand castle well at least i’m good at something
Blow it all off there you go bit of puff oh now we’re rocking boom i’m sure if i walk into any bar in this island and show them this they’ll be like oh you’ve been hanging out with andy there are two sides two types of sand castle builders
Diggers and decorators so you got diggers who just want to dig all so they’re the guys who affects the water and the girls who effects the water and they dig the holes and shovel in sand and they love that and then you get the others who step forward when the
Detailing needs to be done and they love doing detail so the next thing we need is some stairs so we’re going to just carve some stairs in and you always start stairs with a diagonal line i prefer my sand castle to have an elevator an elevator that’s right
We do get requests from real princesses for elevators the reason sand castles are so easy to stack on south padre is simple it’s the sand so why is the sand here so much so much better for building this because we our sand comes from the rio grande
And it’s got about uh between 30 and 40 different um minerals in it um but the sand remains sharp you can see obviously for princesses our sandcastle when he zooms in we’ll see it’s all sparkly and that’s the flat surfaces of our crystals um they’re able to stick together more
Effectively with water between them because they’re like this see this proves ladies and gentlemen and children that you can train anybody so if you think you have no artistic ability at all this man turned up thinking that too getting in a good laugh with andy makes this experience
Incredibly enjoyable and australian in a texan walk into a bar yeah the trouble is they never come out next thing you know we’re blowing on straws is that sufficient blowing but before you know it you really do get lost in the art of building a sand castle there really is something therapeutic
About shaving sand ah well that’s the other thing when you’re doing this what are you thinking about nothing that’s that’s the beauty of it you empty your head you can empty your head of anything that you’re thinking of and just forget the day is here and just have a good time
That’s that’s the true beauty of it while you’re doing it your brain is not engaged in anything else you’re not worried you’re not thinking about your car your kids the school the country you’re not that’s all gone so that’s why it’s an important book at this come down and empty your head
