[Music] today I want to go over some denim secrets that every woman should learn these are things you can use to keep in mind as you’re shopping for jeans or styling your jeans and they can give you the effect that you’re going for whether that’s very streamlined a little bit more oversized if you want your jeans to fade into the background or become the focal point and then I’m also going to go over how you can find your perfect fit to suit the aesthetic that you want so let’s get started so the first denim rule I think every woman should learn is the most classic style of Gene and I think this is really important to understand because much like the old saying goes once you know the rules you can break them so when you’re looking for something that will resist Trends and it’s very very Timeless opt for something that’s a mid to a high waist a straight leg it hits exactly at your ankle not too short not too long and something with very little uh detailing no fraying no whiskering and in a midwash denim that is going to be perfect for every style every personal aesthetic every trend and it’s going to just really be around for as long as possible now with that said if you don’t like this style of Jean then the fact that it resists Trends doesn’t matter because it’ll just sit in your closet and you won’t wear it so my next denim rule that I think every woman should learn is that you need to customize your jeans to suit the aesthetic that you’re going for and ultimately find a style a color and a fit that really makes you feel your best because that’s the most important thing when it comes to personal style so when it comes to finding your own personal fit I think it’s really important to consider the rise first before everything else the rise refers to from your crotch all the way up to the highest point on the jeans and that can dictate how jeans are feeling and ultimately how they’re looking so a very high rise is going to come to above your belly button a midrise will be below your belly button or at your belly button and then a low rise is anything underneath that typically directly on your hip bone sometimes even a little bit lower and understanding what you personally prefer can give you the aesthetic and the overall look that you’re looking for and create proportions within your outfit so if you’re someone like me that has a short torso going for a highrise can give you a very very high-rise look cuz sometimes high-rise jeans can come up to your rib cage so that’s going to make your legs look even longer ultimately make that middle portion look really really long and so if that’s not something that you want consider going for a midrise so the next denim rule I think every woman should learn is that you need to find jeans that suit you and you do not need to stuff yourself into a pair of jeans that’s uncomfortable and you can accommodate a lot of things just by getting them tailored so I want to go over some of the main points that you can have altered in order to find your perfect fit so the first one that’s probably the easiest is taking in the waist this is particularly helpful if you find yourself to have wider hips and a smaller waist and that can be hard to find jeans that fit perfectly for that so by finding a pair of jeans that fit your widest point and you can move and sit and be nice and comfortable in you can walk you can very easily have a tailor take the waist in to give you that perfect cinched look now also it’s important here to keep in mind that you can also have the hips taken in and that’s something that you can do within about an inch maybe an inch and a half at the most so if you have a little bit of extra room along the sides you can have a tailor take that in and they can do that really neatly all the way down to the bottom of the pant and then the last thing that’s really easy to alter in a pair of jeans is the length and specifically here it’s easy to take them up it’s not as easy to make them longer so if you are tall that’s going to be something you want to find you want to find that long length something that’s going to allow you to wear them without needing to take out the Hem cuz there’s very rarely enough fabric left over and by far the best way to do this is to have them reattach the original hem a good tailor is going to be able to do this no question they’ll probably do it without you needing to ask but definitely go ahead and ask this when you are getting a pair of jeans tailored and essentially that just makes them look very finished and as if they were made exactly that length for you so now I want to quickly go over your perfect length and how you can go about choosing that so I think to start things off it’s important to understand that when you’re looking at genes and you’re looking at the length of the gene that’s referring to your inseam and the inseam is really easy to find on your your body or your pair of pants or jeans that you already have it’s essentially where the two legs meet at the crotch and that goes all the way down to however long you want it to be so for me if I want an ankle cross prop I tend to go for around 26 maybe 27 in and that inseam tends to work perfectly for me but if I want something that’s going to be Fuller length I can go up to like 32 or 33 in and that’s going to graze the ground and give me that more long length that I want so now I want to go over some things you can keep in mind when choosing the perfect color for your wardrobe the first is that typically speaking a lighter pair of jeans is going to feel lighter brighter Airy typically a little better suited for warmer weather Sunshine things feel a little more bright and then also they tend to feel a little bit more casual now dark jeans or a dark color typically like that really rich dark blue that tends to feel a little bit more formal a little bit more dressed up so to make them feel even more formal you can go for that really dark beautiful Rich indigo color and find a pair of jeans that has tailoring built into it they almost look like pants so if instead you want to lean into how casual they’re feeling you can opt for that lighter color in that denim but then also include things like fraying and rips and just a lot of distressing built in that’s going to make them feel even more casual and then I also want to go over gray and white jeans for white jeans specifically I think that these work for every aesthetic and you can go for really beautiful stark white or you can go for like kind of a softer white that’s what I tend to go for and then also when you are shopping for white or off-white jeans I recommend going up a size this is going to allow you to a feel more comfortable especially cuz I tend to wear white jeans in the hot weather and I feel really bloated in the hot weather so it allows me to be more comfortable and have a little bit more air moving and then also they less see-through so by going up a size and then maybe tailoring it ever so slightly if you want it taken in at the waist or something that gives you that perfect balance you get the light Airy feeling of the white jeans but they’re not see-through and they’re not too tight and then also I love gray jeans and I think gray jeans are such a great Jean to consider because they’re almost black but I find them to be more versatile than black they go with more colors and then ultimately I think that gray works for the entire year it looks really great with white and off white but then also with those darker colors during the fall and the winter so when you want to draw attention to something continue with the light color that tends to draw your eye to it so going for a lighter wash white or those light uh denim colors and then also when you want to draw attention to an area look for detailing that’s again going to be a little bit more contrasted than than the overall denim so things like whiskering um embellishments and fraying so specifically around the hip region let’s say you don’t want to draw attention to that then avoiding whiskering there will allow you to kind of mask it and create a more uniform line from top to bottom but if you do want to draw attention there whiskering will give you that effect and then likewise with the distressing going for distressed Pockets or maybe a tear here or a little bit higher up that’s going to instantly draw the eye there and make that a focal point and then also you can apply this very same logic to the bottom of the jeans so if you want the attention to go down consider things like a beautiful cuff maybe a large cuff if you want that to be a statement and then also things like fraying that’s going to draw the eye down and make that the focal point so if you’ve got a great pair of shoes or something that can be something nice that you can use so now this of course applies to the back of your jeans as well so if you want to draw attention look for things like distressing again those whiskering details embellishments and then also for your pocket placement that’s going to do a lot in creating the overall Vibe and the aesthetic so if you want things to appear a little bit lifted go for smaller pockets on the back and those are going to be a little bit higher positioned up on the back of your jeans but if you want them to be a little bit lower or maybe you just don’t really care care pay attention to that going for a larger size pocket and something that dips a little lower will kind of create the illusion of things sagging a little bit and that can be really nice if you’re looking for a pair of oversized jeans and you want that more relaxed fit and then likewise with the overall volume of your jeans so if you want something that is going to be really Slim fitting it’s going to be kind of like a skinny jean or a really really Slim straight leg or like a cigarette style Jean that’s going to be really versatile it’s also not going to draw too much attention because that’s going to basically just be the outline of your body but if you want your jeans to be more of a focal point going for something bigger and baggier maybe something that’s got like a really nice balloon shape that’s popular right now and I think those are great or something that’s like a little bit lower waisted and then also really widel legged those are really really great and create a really big impact so to close things out I want to go over the material composition that I keep in mind and what I’ve learned about longevity and then ultimately creating the kind of aesthetic that you want so when you’re looking for something that’s going to last a really long time 100% cotton and specifically something that’s like a midweight that tends to last forever they’re really really durable they kind of speak to the original intention behind jeans and them being really functional and durable and kind of a true Workhorse of a wardrobe but the problem with that is that they can tend to be a little bit stiff so it might not give you the aesthetic that you’re looking for and it might not be very comfortable so if you are looking to go for kind of a softer pair you can definitely find 100% cotton that’s very very thin it has a tendency to wear out a little bit quicker but if you’re looking for that look that’s going to give you more wear overall rather than having something that’s 100% cotton that won’t wear or date but you never reach for it so then it ends up being a waste in your wardrobe so in my experience going for 90 to 98% cotton and then filling the rest with elastan gives you a really nice mix elastin tends to be a little bit more durable than some of the other synthetics that will be blended with cotton and it gives you that nice stretch so again if you want a pair of jeans that’s going to hug your body really nicely and give you a really snug fit going for something that has that elastine built into it can give you that they’re also a little bit more comfortable cuz they tend to feel a little bit more like leggings and as long as you can find that perfect balance for yourself and then take care of them you’ll have a pair of jeans that you’ll truly truly love so the next time that you’re shopping for jeans I hope that some of these tips will be helpful for you and they can be used to create the overall aesthetic that you’re looking for and find a pair of jeans that hits that sweet spot between aesthetic style function and then longevity for your wardrobe that way you’re making the best purchase so definitely let me know in the comments down below if there’s anything else that you’d like to cover about denim specifically or any other topic feel free to leave your recommendations down below and I’ll add them to my list and like always thank you so much for watching and I’ll see you my next one have a great day [Music]
The Ultimate Guide to Timeless Denim Style
Denim—whether distressed, tailored, or vintage—is more than just fabric; it’s a staple of self-expression and personal style.
As our wardrobe MVP, jeans seamlessly blend practicality with fashion, standing the test of time through changing trends.
If you’ve ever wondered how to nail the perfect pair or style them for maximum impact, you’re in for a treat.
This guide breaks down denim essentials, from finding your ideal fit to making a lasting wardrobe investment.
Let’s dive in and unravel the secrets of this timeless classic!
1. Denim Rules You Need to Know Before Shopping
The Golden Rule: Timeless Over Trendy
When in doubt, go for classic cuts and washes.
A mid-to-high waist, a straight-leg style that hits at the ankle is universally flattering and resistant to fleeting trends.
Why this works:
- Versatility: Easily pairs with casual and dressy looks.
- Longevity: Midwash denim doesn’t scream any particular era, so it remains stylish year after year.
đź’ˇ Fun Fact: According to a 2024 denim trends survey, 70% of women prioritize comfort and durability over trendy details when choosing jeans.
2. Customize Your Fit: Finding the Perfect Rise
Jeans aren’t one-size-fits-all, and choosing the right rise can make or break your look:
- High-Rise: Ideal for creating an elongated silhouette. Best for petite women or those with longer legs.
- Mid-Rise: A safe bet, sitting at or just below the belly button. Perfect for balanced proportions.
- Low-Rise: A 2000s throwback making a comeback but works best for those with defined hips and a flat stomach.
đź’ˇ Tailoring Tip: A good tailor can tweak the waist, hips, or length to ensure the jeans feel like they were made just for you!
How to Measure for Your Inseam
Knowing your inseam is critical for choosing jeans that hit the right length:
- Measure from the crotch seam to the hem of your favorite jeans.
- For an ankle crop, go for 26–27 inches.
- For full-length jeans, aim for 32–34 inches.
3. Color, Distressing, and Detailing: Building Your Denim Arsenal
Denim color and distressing can make a huge difference in your overall vibe:
Color Psychology of Jeans
- Light Wash: Casual, airy, and perfect for warm weather.
- Dark Indigo: More formal and polished; works well for office-casual looks.
- White Jeans: A wardrobe wildcard—opt for an off-white shade for versatility.
- Gray Denim: Understated and effortlessly chic, a versatile alternative to black.
The Role of Distressing
- Whiskering: Adds visual interest but can widen the hips.
- Fraying: Ideal for drawing attention to the hem or complementing casual outfits.
- Ripped Knees: A trend-forward option but keep it subtle for versatility.
4. Tailoring Tips That Transform Ordinary Jeans into Extraordinary Pieces
Sometimes the perfect pair isn’t found—it’s created. Here’s what a tailor can do for you:
- Waist Adjustments: For curvier women, buy jeans that fit your hips and have the waist taken in.
- Hips and Thighs: A slight taper can work wonders for a sleek silhouette.
- Length Adjustments: Always ask for the original hem to be reattached for a natural finish.
💡 Pro Tip: Jeans with 90–98% cotton and a touch of elastane are the easiest to tailor.
5. Making Jeans Work for Different Occasions
Who says jeans are only for weekends?
Here’s how to style them for various settings:
Casual Looks
- Pair light-wash jeans with a graphic tee and sneakers for effortless streetwear vibes.
Office Attire
- Dark-wash or tailored denim with a crisp white shirt and blazer creates a polished, work-appropriate outfit.
Evening Glam
- Opt for black or gray skinny jeans with heels and a statement top for an edgy, nighttime look.
6. Fun Denim Stats to Up Your Style Game
- 10% of women own over 10 pairs of jeans, yet only wear their top three favorites regularly.
- The average lifespan of well-maintained jeans is 6 years, but 100% cotton denim can last decades.
- Skinny jeans still hold the crown for the most-sold denim style globally, but wide-leg styles are catching up.
7. Choosing the Right Material for Longevity
Fabric composition matters when picking jeans that will stand the test of time:
- 100% Cotton: Durable and timeless but can be stiff and harder to break in.
- Stretch Denim (90–98% Cotton, 2–10% Elastane): Combines comfort with a snug fit, perfect for daily wear.
- Blended Fabrics: Look for blends with Tencel or polyester for added softness and flexibility.
8. Pro Tips for Caring for Your Jeans
Extend the life of your denim with these care tips:
- Wash sparingly: Overwashing causes fading and weakens the fabric.
- Cold Water Only: Hot water fades the dye faster.
- Air Dry: Ditch the dryer for a longer lifespan.
đź’ˇ Did You Know? Levi Strauss designed the first pair of jeans in 1873, originally intended for miners and laborers.
Denim Dreams Are Made of These
Finding the perfect pair of jeans is an art.
By focusing on fit, fabric, and your unique style, you can build a wardrobe anchored by denim staples that last a lifetime.
Remember, jeans are an extension of your personality—whether you prefer timeless mid-wash straight legs or bold, distressed wide-legs.
So, next time you shop for jeans, arm yourself with these tips and don’t settle until you find the pair that makes you feel unstoppable.
After all, denim isn’t just clothing—it’s a lifestyle.
