You forgot that Texas owns it public lands instead of the federal government like the other states and a lot of the land has oil. Texas has no income tax mainly because, it has oil.
You forgot the Compromise of 1850. As a result of winning the Mexican American War, the USA, purchased the western US including California. Texas used to be a lot bigger. Because of the Compromise of 1850, Texas sold the northern part of Texas that extended to Colorado, and California became a state in 1850.
Texas was admitted by joint resolution of Congress instead of treaty because the Senate could not get the 2/3 vote together because Texas would be admitted as a slave state.
